The program was launched by the current Indian Prime Minister Honorable Narendra Modi on 11th October 2014. The day has a special significance of being the birth anniversary of the socialist Jayaprakash Narayana. As the name suggests, the motive is to come up with an ideal role model, ‘Adarsh villages’ which can be replicated in other villages for growth, development, and regeneration.

This aim can be achieved through the implementation of certain schemes which are formulated according to the cultural and the social context of the local communities. Therefore, there are different schemes and strategies for different villages.
